Former Illini receiver Isaiah Williams waived by Detroit Lions

Former Illini Football star wide receiver, Isaiah Williams, has been waived by the Detroit Lions. Williams went undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft, however, impressed during the preseason. Isaiah made the roster after catching 11 passes in three games for a total of 123 yards. He even signed on for a 225,000 dollar guarantee. However, the Detroit Lions are one of the best teams in the NFL and are extremely deep at the slot receiver position. Williams appeared in two games this year. Overall, his most notable contribution was a 36-yard kickoff return vs the Tennessee Titans. With star wideout, Jameson Williams, returning this week, Isaiah Williams is the odd man out here. The former Illini Football star, however, can still make an NFL team.

Given how well he did this preseason, there is a pretty high likelihood that a team will claim Williams off of waivers. If this doesn’t happen, it is possible that the Detroit Lions keep him around on the practice squad.

With Williams currently on waivers, that means that there is only one former Illini receiver in the NFL. That player is current Atlanta Falcons receiver, Casey Washington. Washington has one catch for 14 yards this offseason and will continue to battle for his roster spot.
