Former Illinois Basketball Point Guard Drops Triple Double

Andre Curbelo is now in his senior year playing with his third team. After a year at St Johns, Andre transferred to Southern Mississippi and has recently earned eligibility. On Thursday, Andre Curbelo posted a triple double vs the Georgia Southern Panthers. Curbelo posted 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists in a home win. Despite the triple double, the statline was very Andre Curbelo. Andre shot 5 for 21 from the field and had 4 turnovers.

The Former Illinois Basketball point guard is currently averaging 14.3 points per game, 6.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

The Illinois Curbelo

The Andre Curbelo experience was certainly representative of the style of play that the Puerto Rican point guard played. Curbelo burst on the scene as a true freshman. His electric play-making and court vision made him a force coming off the bench for a veteran laden team. Though he had his moments of frustration, there were mostly moments of sheer brilliance. As Ayo Dosunmu left, Andre Curbelo looked primed to take on the role of the next great Illinois Point guard.

Andre struggled in his increased role. Subsequently, he suffered a pretty intense concussion which held him out for most of the year. The Puerto Rico native went on to struggle finding his rhythm and joy when he came back which ultimately prompted him to transfer.

A fun watch.

Curbelo will always be one of the most fun watches in Illinois Basketball history. His point guard skills made him extremely entertaining despite his frequent volatility. Illinois fans will always be rooting for Andre to reach his full potential in basketball.
