Illinicast Episode 87: Illinois Lands Transfer DB, New Coach

On episode 87 of Illinicast, hosts Sunny and Austin give their thoughts on Illinois Football’s newest additions to the program. Head coach Bret Bielema’s staff recently added a 5-star corner transfer Terrance Brooks from Texas. Certainly, a much-needed quality pickup for the secondary, who will look to step in and be a big-impact leader, with a veteran presence. The newest Illini will be led by recently hired defensive backs coach Corey Parker. Corey spent the past two seasons coaching DBs for Jason Candle and the Toledo Rockets. Coaching two-time All-American Quinyon Mitchell to a first-round draft pick.  Reactions to the new pickups, and more below on episode 87 of Illinicast.

Armchair Illini Breakdown: Terrance Brooks

Per Alex Kyi – Brooks is a former four-star defensive back who played two seasons for the Texas Longhorns. Terrance was a top-100 overall prospect coming out of high school and fills one of the biggest positions of need on the Illinois Football roster. This past season, Brooks started 13 games for the Longhorns and totaled 3 interceptions and 6 pass deflections. This was a big boy recruitment as Brooks had plans to visit USC and Michigan, however, the clear need at DB was likely what sold Illinois Football to Terrance Brooks.

Armchair Illini Breakdown: New DB Coach Corey Parker

Per Kirkland Chappell – After David Gibbs resigned from the Illinois Football program in the spring due to health issues, the Illini were down a defensive backs coach. Aaron Henry’s unit needed to add a quality leader in the secondary, and they did just that on Monday (5/13). Bret Bielema has officially hired former Toledo defensive backs coach Corey Parker, who spent the past two seasons coaching corners for the Rockets. During his short time in Northern Ohio, Parker helped lead two-time All-American Quinyon Mitchell to a first-round draft pick. Recently, Mitchell was selected No. 22 overall in the NFL Draft, taking his talents to the Philadelphia Eagles. Parker boasted a top-10 passing defense in both of his seasons with Toledo.
