Illinois Women’s basketball upsets No. 19 Florida State

Year three of the Shauna Green era has started with a bang. The Fighting Illini Women’s basketball team started their year with a ranked victory at home vs the 19th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. Per Joey Wagner of Illini Inquirer, this was the sixth ranked win for the Illini since November 28th, 2014. Third-year coach, Shauna Green, has been responsible for three of those wins. Otherwise, in that time span, the Illini have lost a total of 44 games vs ranked opponents. The victory over the Seminoles started with the strong production from seniors Kendall Bostic and Adalia McKenzie. Bostic had her usual near-double-double with 19 points and 9 rebounds. McKenzie also contributed with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Fifth-year guard, Makira Cook, also contributed with 20 points.
In the postgame press conference, Green was thankful for the two Fighting Illini stars saying “For them, I’m so happy for them. I can’t imagine how good it feels now and how proud they must feel. That’s why listening to those two talk was like, ‘Man, this is what it’s about.’ They came when the program wasn’t doing well, they stayed committed to it and to see the build-up now, I love for them to have success. It’s unbelievable.”
What’s next for the Illini?
Though this is a marquee win, the work continues for the Fighting Illini. On Sunday night at 7 pm CST, they will host the Marquette Golden Eagles for another home game. This game will also feature the WBIT Championship Banner Unveiling. Shauna Green and the Fighting Illini Women’s basketball team have continued to fight and produce results. Illini fans and students, if you are available on Sunday night, make sure to give your support to help the team earn another high major victory!
