Illinois football faces a very difficult path to victory Saturday, with Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes looming in week 4. That said, there are still plenty of ways for the Illini to find success in Columbus.

At 2-1, Illinois enters Big Ten play with a promising foundation, while still searching for more consistency in several areas.

Quarterback Katin Houser has settled in and looked comfortable as Illinois’ offensive leader. Senior wideout Collin Dixon has quickly emerged as one of the country’s most productive receivers. Dixon has hauled in 25 catches for 367 yards and seven touchdowns through three games. The passing game has become a clear strength for Illinois, but an inconsistent rushing attack and injuries along the offensive line remain significant concerns for coach Barry Lunney Jr’s unit heading into a road matchup with the 7th-ranked Buckeyes.

Defensively, Bobby Hauck’s new 3-3-5 is still taking shape as Illinois continues to adjust to the new scheme and several new pieces. There have been encouraging flashes, including last week’s performance against Southern Illinois, when the Illini allowed just 29 rushing yards and 10 points to the Salukis, including an 88-yard Matthew Bailey pick-6 to cap the victory. That said, tackling has been an issue that needs to be cleaned up ASAP. Despite a much better tackling performance in Week 2, this challenge is a major step up.

It’s certainly no knock on SIU, but Illinois Football faces a much different test in Columbus….

Quick Ohio State Breakdown Through Week 3

The No. 7 Buckeyes enter Big Ten play at 2-1 after opening the season with a dominant 56-3 win over Ball State. Then, their first real test came the following week in Austin, where Ohio State built a 23-3 lead over No. 4 Texas before the Longhorns stormed back for a 24-23 win. Similarly to the Illini, a gut-wrenching, close week two loss, prior to a major comeback in Week 3. Last week, the Buckeyes responded by cruising to a 59-3 blowout of Kent State to revamp their momentum heading into a Big Ten home opener with Illinois.

Through three games, quarterback Julian Sayin has impressed with 839 passing yards and 6 touchdowns to date, developing a dangerous connection with arguably the top receiver in the country, Jeremiah Smith, who’s already tabbed 400 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Additionally, running back Bo Jackson has rushed for 230 yards and 5 touchdowns, to help complement the Buckeyes’ stellar passing attack.

Defensively, team captain and leading edge rusher Kenyatta Jackson Jr. leads a talented front that will have its sights set on QB Katin Houser and a shuffled Illinois offensive line. To date, he’s already racked up a team-leading 2 sacks on 9 tackles. Undoubtedly, a major test for coach Bart Miller’s offensive line.

Of course, there’s only one win-loss column, and nobody is looking for a moral victory. Still, if the miracle doesn’t happen Saturday, there are tangible objectives Illinois can check off that would allow the Illini to leave Columbus encouraged heading into Week 5.

So, what would a successful trip to Columbus look like for the Illini?

1. Stay Healthy

Illinois has already taken some significant hits along the offensive line. TJ McMillen is out for the season, while Brandon Henderson and Maika Matelau are working their way back into rotation. That has forced the Illini to rely on a reshuffled group up front, and now that group gets its toughest assignment yet against a Matt Patricia defense loaded with NFL talent.

Nobody is suggesting Illinois should play cautiously or pull punches. In fact, the Illini need to play their game, compete physically, and give themselves a chance to create some momentum looking ahead.  However, coming out of the Shoe without another major injury, particularly along the offensive line, would be extremely valuable. Illinois has a massive Week 5 opportunity to push momentum forward against Purdue, and having as many pieces available as possible would be extremely important.

2. Beat the Massive Spread as a Nearly Four-Touchdown Underdog

FanDuel currently lists Ohio State as a 27.5-point favorite, making the Illini a nearly four-touchdown underdog. For Bret Bielema’s crew, the challenge is beating those odds.

Illinois’ offense has enough ability to make Ohio State work, but the unit will need to be much more consistent than it has been through the first three games of the season. Houser has already shown he can make throws and create explosive plays, having created a dangerous connection with Collin Dixon. The question remains whether Coach Lunney can put together enough sustained drives to keep his offense on the field and prevent Ohio State from turning the game into a track meet. On the flip side, can the Illini defense force enough stops to keep this one within striking distance?

If Illinois can stay within reach, avoid several turnovers, and consistently force Ohio State to earn it, that’s a win in my book. More importantly, it would give this team something tangible to build on looking ahead to the rest of Big Ten play.

3. Establish a Solid Rushing Attack

That brings the conversation back to the ground game, which could be one of the biggest keys to what the Illini want to accomplish Saturday. Collin Dixon has quickly become the focal point of Illinois passing attack, and Ohio State will make slowing him down a top priority. With talented defensive backs like Devin Sanchez on the other side, Illinois can’t afford to become predictable if they want a shot to keep this one close.

Despite continuous inconsistency, the Illini showed some flashes on the ground against Southern Illinois, rushing for 198 yards, including Aidan Laughery’s 77-yard touchdown. Ohio State, however, presents a completely different challenge than an in-state FCS opponent. Illinois is gonna need more than a couple of explosive runs per game to find success moving forward. Let alone when facing the Buckeyes…. The goal in week 4 should be establishing enough of a consistent presence to keep the Buckeyes honest, extend drives, and create opportunities for Houser in the passing game. If they can do so, it may open up opportunities for big connections with Collin Dixon, Hudson Clement, and others.

If Illinois can establish a legitimate rushing presence against arguably the best defense the unit will face all season, it would ultimately give the offense another dimension and provide some much-needed momentum heading into Purdue week.
