Following Up With 4-Star In-State Offensive Lineman Cameron Wagner

The Illinois Football staff is keeping recruiting efforts very local in their search for top in-state talent.
4-star offensive lineman Cameron Wagner is just a short drive away up I-74 in St. Joseph (IL)—a tight-knit community of around 3,900 people in the heart of Illini country. Measuring 6’6 and 280lbs, Wagner is currently the 7th-ranked offensive tackle in the class of 2027 according to 247 Sports. Additionally, 247sports has Wagner as the top overall prospect in Illinois, in his class (27′). It is certainly a no-brainer why the Illini staff is in such heavy pursuit of a very talented young man, just 15-20 minutes up the road.
Currently, Cameron’s grind is assisting the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans on an undefeated run heading into the final week of the IHSA regular season. “Our season is going great. I am loving it, and I believe we can make it all the way this year,” says Wagner in regard to his 8-0 Spartans.
However, recruiting is coming into play heavily for the Central IL 4-star, who holds offers from Illinois, Louisville, and Miami (OH). Following a trip to Champaign to watch Illinois Football take down Michigan, Cameron generously took some time to follow up with us on his recent visit.

What’s it like right now, being a 4-star recruit in St. Joseph Illinois? (Population: 3,931)

“It is awesome for sure to be recruited like I am, and it makes it even better being from a small town.” stated the St. Joseph native. “Everywhere I go they know who I am, and I feel really supported by my community. It just feels so cool.

How does it feel to have the Illini in heavy pursuit, just 15 minutes down the road?

“It just feels great,” states Wagner. “I have made great relationships with most of the coaches on the staff, and I love how close we are to each other, because it’s not a hassle to get to campus and see them.”

You recently watched Illinois Football take on Michigan on your visit to Champaign. Tell us about that experience as a local recruit from the Champaign Area?

“Yes, it was a great game,” said Wagner. “I felt like a VIP because they really rolled out the red carpet for me. It was an amazing experience with the coaches and a couple of other recruits. I also really like how they treated my family they didn’t just focus on me, they also focused on everyone in my family as well.”

What does the recruiting world look like right now for you?

“Recruiting looks crazy for me right now.” stated the 4-star OL. “Tons of schools are reaching out. A few schools that stand out are Illinois, Nebraska, Tennessee, Louisville, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

When asked if he could envision himself at Illinois, Cameron stated, “I could see my self staying home.

What Do You Enjoy Doing Outside the Crazy World of Being a Highly Sought-After Recruit?

“My hobbies outside of football are things to do with cars. I have been getting into car audio recently, and I really like that. I also really like welding at St. Joe’s Metal Shape at our school.
