Illinois Football Lands Key Defensive Backs

The best part about the start of Spring is the fact that Illinois Football recruiting tends to heat up. Heading into the summer, the Illinois Football team starts to lay its foundation in hopes of creating a buzz to start the summer. Additionally, the transfer portal heats up with basketball and causes a whole recruiting saga. Illinois Football seems to have waves of activity. They have created a robust foundation to start off their class of 2025. So far, they have landed two high-upside offensive linemen and have landed a power-five quarterback.

This past week alone, the Illini have completed their coaching staff and have landed two intriguing defensive backs from the prep world.

Andre Lovett

Lovett was the big fish that Illinois Football needed to get. Andre is a high 3-star in-state Athlete who has multiple power-five offers. We say many times on this site that Illinois must land these type of prospects consistently if they want any chance of winning. The players like Keith Randolph Jr and Kendrick Green were the same kind of recruit. Lovett had offers from Purdue, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, and more. Though these types of recruits may take a few years to develop (awaiting the jury on Eian Pugh, Aidan Laughery, and Malik Elzy), these types of recruits tend to work more often than not.

Lovett will be an interesting addition to a rather thinning defensive secondary that is filled with young prospects.

Xanai Scott

Xanai Scott is more of an unknown but he does have strong bloodlines. The young Xanai is the younger brother of current Illinois defensive back, Xavier Scott. Scott had a breakout sophomore season and showed some great potential. The elder Scott had 11 pass deflections and 2 interceptions during the 2023 season. As a matter of fact, Xanai has a similar height and weight as his older brother. Given that Aaron Henry celebrated the recruiting win on Twitter, I assume that Xanai will play in the defensive backfield.
