Illinois football lands four-star athlete Justin Johnson

Another big prep commitment for Bret Bielema. The Illinois football program has landed a major early win in the Class of 2027 by securing a commitment from 4-star in-state ATH Justin Johnson out of Evanston (IL). The 6’2, 180-pound defensive back made his pledge to the Illini just a week after head coach Bret Bielema and staff, including Terry Hawthorne, Corey Parker, Pat Embleton, and Nate McNeal, visited Evanston to meet him in person, following an offer back in September. Johnson held a plethora of significant offers from programs such as Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers, Washington, Stanford, and Cincinnati, among others.

Following his commitment, Johnson is currently rated as the 12th overall ATH in the state of Illinois, in addition to being ranked the 20th ATH nationally in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

The Evanston native’s commitment marks the Fighting Illini’s second pledge for 2027 (first in state). He joins four-star Utah quarterback Kamden Lopati as the Illini’s sole commits thus far in the class. Notably, the highly-ranked duo pushes Illinois 2027 class into the No. 38 spot in the very early 247Sports team rankings.

What Johnson Brings to the Illini

For Illinois, landing Johnson highlights the program’s ability to continue securing top in-state talent. Bret Bielema continues to mold his program by keeping the best in-state prospects home.

Johnson has excelled at multiple positions for the Wildkits. His versatility, athleticism, and dangerous speed undoubtedly make him one of the state’s most dynamic recruits. Johnson certainly possesses the rare combination of size, speed, and versatility that can impact the roster immediately – even if that’s in a high-production special teams role. His lengthy 6’2 frame and explosiveness give him the tools to compete at multiple secondary positions. Plus, he has strong ball skills and instincts, allowing him to track passes, break on the ball, and create turnovers at a high level for a young man of his age.

Beyond his physically impressive on-field traits, Johnson’s local roots give him a different perspective and motivation while growing within the Illinois system.

Regardless of a new defensive coordinator and system in place, Illinois has consistently produced NFL-level defensive back talent under Bret Bielema. Johnson appears to have made a strong choice by staying close to home, traveling just 150 miles south for the opportunity to develop with a program that has a proven track record of developing top-tier defensive backs.
