Illinois football news: DT Darrell Prater signs with the Illini
Illinois adds much needed depth in coach Terrance Jamison’s unit.
News: Illinois football continues to add much-needed depth on its defensive front. Late Tuesday evening (1/20), as reported by Chris Hummer and Jeremy Werner of 247 Sports, the Fighting Illini have landed the commitment of Jacksonville State defensive tackle Darrell Prater, who will spend his final season of eligibility in Champaign.
Over three seasons in the C-USA, the Fort Payne, Alabama native tabbed up 63 tackles (26 solo) and 6 sacks for the Gamecocks, including a strong performance in the Cure Bowl, where he secured 3 solo tackles, in addition to a tackle for loss vs Ohio University. That said, Prater’s final season at Jax State is where he took his biggest leap in production, having racked up 23 tackles (14 solo, 5 TFL), and 5 sacks over 13 games (0f 14) in 2025.
What does it mean for Terrance Jamison and the Illini defensive line?
What it Means: Illinois adds Darrell Prater to the D-Line with Several New Faces
Considering the mass turnover Illinois’ defensive front has recently suffered, the 6’3, 300-pound nose tackle adds yet another much-needed seasoned veteran with starting experience, who can enter the program and be a heavy contributor. He’s a strong player who moves pretty well for his size, and pending some work with Tank Wright and the Illini strength and conditioning staff, he’s got potential to make a big impact on a solid Big Ten team in 2026.
That said, Bret Bielema’s staff has prioritized defensive linemen in the transfer portal. Since the beginning of the offseason, Illinois has added Connor Sullivan (Washington State), Carter Janki (Penn), and Isaiah Thomison (Bowling Green), with others likely still on the way. Plus, Redshirt junior Pat Farrell and redshirt sophomore Demetrius John are also still in the mix, and they’ll enter 2026 with the most familiarity in Aaron Henry’s defense. So, it’s shaping up to be a true battle in Coach Jamison’s room.
Can Prater work his way into a starting role? It’s certainly possible if he can get his strength to match the grind of playing on the defensive line in the Big Ten. Regardless, he’s a quality rotational/depth addition who will see the field in 2026.
