News: Illinois Football Earns AP Top-25 Ranking

Illinois Football Ranked #24 In the Nation

After taking down veteran coach Jim McElwain and his Central Michigan Chippewas, Illinois Football is now 3-0 for the first time since 2011. Additionally, the Fighting Illini have earned themselves a spot in this week’s AP Top 25 College Football Rankings

According to the Associated Press rankings released on Sunday (9/15), Illinois currently sits at 24th in the nation. Certainly, it is another major milestone for Illinois Football under head coach Bret Bielema.  The last time the Illini found themselves in the top-25, was a breakout season under Bielema in 2022, when they ranked as high as 14th.

Opportunity Calls

If Illinois can continue this momentum forward, a favorable 2nd half to their schedule is an exciting opportunity to capitalize and finish. However, Illinois must hold strong in the 2nd phase of the season, as conference play begins. The likes of #9 Oregon, #8 Penn State, #18 Michigan and of course, Friday’s ever-important matchup with #22 Nebraska, will tell a lot about this team.

Furthermore, Illinois must avoid the toss-up losses that happened in 2022. The Illini suffered heartbreaking defeats to the likes of Indiana, Purdue, and Michigan State,  which prevented them from competing for a Big Ten Championship in Indy. Take care of business against teams that you can and should beat, then give yourself a chance against your 3 tougher opponents.

The Illinois Football program holds a great opportunity, for a special season at their grasp. Will they be able to continue this positive momentum, and remain “ranked and relevant” ?
