Former Illinois Football QB Shines in Preseason Opener
Touchdown Tommy? Tommy Devito only spent one year in Champaign, however he quickly became a fan favorite. Devito’s swagger and confidence on and off the field endeared himself to the hungry Illini fan base. He also led arguably the most successful Illinois Football season in a decade. After yearly QB instability and shortcomings, Tommy Devito was just a solid quarterback. He did not put the ball in harms way, and just made the right decision. He may not have had many homeruns, but he had a lot of base hits.
The New Jersey native had a career year in his final college football season. Ultimately, Devito went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft. Despite this, Devito signed with the New York Giants. He currently is in the battle for the 3rd string, however he got extended run on Friday night’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions
Solid as always.
Tommy Devito showed exactly what he did well in Champaign. He was solid with the ball and made proper decisions. Unfortunately, Devito was sacked 5 times by the aggressive Lions defensive line. However, Devito’s final stat line was 15-24 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Tommy threw for a total of 155 yards, including this nice touchdown pass to his Tight end.
Devito’s one interception was also on a last second hail mary to try to score. Devito had some nice throws otherwise in the full highlights. He played practically the entire game, which shows that the Giants are likely going to keep him around for the third string behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor.
Other Illinois Football players.
Illinois Football has some players scattered around the NFL trying to make themselves known during preseason. Vederian Lowe played a number of snaps on the Minnesota Vikings. Devon Witherspoon has been limited in the Seahawks training camp. Chase Brown made his debut with the Bengals. Brown struggled on the run, however had 3 pass catches for 33 yards. Milo Eifler and Jartavius Martin had 4 tackles each for the Washington Commanders, Kendall Smith also recorded a tackle. Kendrick Green is still on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Doug Kramer will probably make his pro debut in a bit on the Chicago Bears, and Tony Adams looks to continue to impress on the New York Jets.
