Illinois Football Moves Up Two Spots in the AP Top 25

Illinois Football certainly earned this week’s ranking.

The Fighting Illini showed out in the 100th rededication of Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In celebration of Red Grange’s legendary October 19th, 1924 game, Illinois dominated the defending national champions in Memorial Stadium’s 77th all-time sellout. Certainly, a fitting tribute to Grange, as he famously wore number 77 during his time in Champaign.

Turnovers and sacks sparked a strong bounce-back effort from Aaron Henry‘s defense, which showed improvement across the board and held Michigan to their fewest points scored since 2014 (against Notre Dame). On the flip side, Luke Altmyer and the Illini offense controlled the pace of the game and racked up 267 total yards en route to a 21-7 upset.

Following the huge victory, Illinois Football secured a spot in the Top 25 for a sixth consecutive week. The Illini climbed two spots, landing at No. 20 in this week’s AP rankings, further solidifying their resume at 6-1.

A Quick Look Ahead

While you are taking a look at this week’s Top-25, go ahead and scroll all the way to the top. Oregon is #1 in this week’s AP Rankings, in addition to being next up on the schedule for Illinois Football.  Led by head coach Dan Lanning, Oregon boasts an incredibly talented roster featuring one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, Dillon Gabriel.

The Illini face a tough challenge this week as they prepare to challenge the Ducks on the road in Eugene.
