Big recruiting news struck the Illinois Football program over the weekend as 3-star quarterback Michael Clayton II announced his verbal commitment to the University of Illinois. The native of Sanford, Florida (Seminole High School) became the Illini’s first commit in the 2026 class. His pledge additionally boosts the Fighting Illini to 46th nationally in the 2026 rankings.
The 6’3″, 200-pound gunslinger is ranked as the 28th-best quarterback in the 2026 class by 247 Sports. In addition, Clayton is listed as one of the top 500 overall recruits in the nation, and among the top 70 players in the talent-rich Sunshine State.

What Made the Illini Stand Out Among Several Impressive Offers?
With several SEC, ACC, and Big Ten powerhouses knocking on the door for Clayton, a decision to make an early commitment to the Illini is an eye-opening statement to the growth of the Illinois Football program.
For Michael, it’s all in the “famILLy.”
It came down to my belief in the coaches and their belief in what I can accomplish at Illinois,” says Clayton. “Also the consistency of what they do, how they teach it, results on the field, and belief that we can win the biggest games in college football.
The 3-star commit continued, “Then everything else important to me is great as far as facilities, living, school, game day, fanbase, community. It really feels like famILLy.
What Impressed You Most About the Illini Staff During Recruitment?
The Illini were certainly adamant about locking down the talented quarterback.
Following a camp in Miami where the Illinois coaches got to watch Michael in action, the Illini staff put high priority on the Central Florida native. Of course, it seems the Bielema and company did well, based on the early commitment. No doubt, an impressive win on “The U’s” turf, before the Hurricanes could sway the skilled passer.
“They are real people, genuine, honest, and Elite coaches,” said Clayton. “I think Coach B is one of the best head coaches in college football. Coach Lunney’s offense is dynamic and will be explosive and fun to play in. Also, Coach Art Sitkowski was big in my decision i look forward to being there and getting to work.”
What is Intriguing About Illinois Offense Scheme Under Barry Lunney Jr?
For a quarterback with an impressive offer list to close down his recruiting process early, there certainly has to be an immense level of trust in the direction of said players’ future scheme. The Illini have certainly shown offensive growth under OC Barry Lunney Jr., with the development of quarterback Luke Altmyer starting to pay off in recruiting efforts.
“I think it can be one of the most exciting offenses in the country,” stated the Illini QB commit. “I think we can excel, win the Big Ten, and compete for national championships.”
