Illinois Locks-in OC Barry Lunney Jr. With Record Setting 3-Year Deal
Lunney Jr. has been spectacular in his five seasons in Champaign.
NEWS: Illini football solidified a key piece of Bret Bielema’s staff, agreeing to a record-setting 3-year contract with offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. The 5th-year OC agreed to a whopping $4.35 million to remain in Champaign through 2028, which will pay Lunney about $1.4 million per year. Notably, the agreement makes him the highest-paid assistant coach in program history.

What it Means: Illinois Signs Barry Lunney Jr to a 3-year, $4.35 million Deal
For Illinois, it’s a clear commitment to continuity and sustainability within Bielema’s program, which will reward one of the more consistent and proven play-callers in the Big Ten.
Since the former UTSA OC arrived in Champaign ahead of the 2021 season, the talented play caller has progressively built one of the more reliable offenses in the conference. His units have consistently finished in the top half of the league in scoring, with all but one season (2021) topping 24.5 points per game. Plus, those averages have only gotten better.
PPG Averages Under Barry Lunney Jr’s Tenure in Champaign
2021: 20.2 PPG
2022: 24.5 PPG
2023: 25.1 PPG
2024: 27.8 PPG
Of course, the steady progress of Illinois’ offense is a testament to the execution of Lunney Jr.’s system and the development of its leaders. In just five seasons, Lunney Jr. has developed program favorites like Tommy DeVito into a pro during his lone season in Champaign and kept things rolling with Luke Altmyer over the next three years, providing steady production at the game’s most important position. Both former Illini quarterbacks could soon find themselves on NFL rosters, as the veteran OC now turns his attention to ECU grad transfer Katin Houser, who will spend his final season in Champaign under Lunney, looking to do the same.
Keeping Lunney in place is a major win for Illinois. Coordinators with his experience and track record often draw heavy interest for head coaching gigs and from major programs looking to upgrade. For now, this deal keeps him in Champaign and places him among the highest-paid assistants in college football. However, it also signals that Illinois is willing to invest heavily in Bielema’s staff to sustain success and maintain stability moving forward.
