“I’m Going to Bet on Myself” Isaiah Williams out to Prove Himself at the Combine
Isaiah Williams, one of the most productive receivers in Illinois football history, turns his attention to the NFL Draft.
“I felt like I got better and better every year. I’ve only been playing receiver for three years.” Those are the words of Illinois quarterback turned slot receiver Isaiah Williams. The Missouri native is one of those rare prospects who was productive in college- he’s second all-time in receptions and fourth all-time in yards- but he still has room to grow. Though he did not put up huge numbers in the East/West Shrine Bowl, scouts raved about his week of practice.
After the East-West game, Williams turned his attention to the NFL Scouting Combine. Williams had a solid combine but did not blow anyone away with his performance.
Williams’ Combine Numbers:
40 Time: 4.63
Vertical: 38″
Broad Jump: 10’3″
3-Cone: 6.75
Bench Press: 17 reps
WR Gauntlet: 19.04 mph
Williams had a solid combine. The 40-yard time was a tad low, but he will be a slot receiver at the next level, so the 40 time isn’t as important as his ability to run routes. In addition, the tape shows his strengths as a receiver. Remember, some of the best slot receivers we’ve seen did not run blazing 40-yard dash times. Randall Cobb ran a 4.55, Wes Welker ran a 4.62, and Danny Amendola ran a 4.70.
Williams proved over the last two seasons that he is a playmaker with the football in his hands. He is tremendous in space with quickness and wiggle in tight spaces. Most importantly, Williams knows how to get open and hold on to the football.
