Keaton Wagler drops historic performance in Illini win at Mackey Arena

The Illini came into this game vs Mackey Arena as major underdogs heading into a top-15 matchup vs the Purdue Boilermakers. When the announcement was made that senior guard Kylan Boswell would miss at least one month with a fractured shooting hand, many were worried about how the Illini would fare vs Purdue. However, Keaton Wagler soared and exceeded all expectations as he has done since the moment he arrived on campus.

The freshman phenom put on a historic performance, not just by the Illini standards, but in the history of college basketball. Keaton Wagler just walked into Mackey Arena and scored 46 points en route to a victory. How many true freshmen can even think about doing something like that?

Special Illini Performances

I cannot think of many other Illini performances as impactful as the one Keaton Wagler just had. Terrence Shannon Jr. had some special games, including a 40-point performance in a win over Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament. Shannon Jr also had some major performances to lift the Illini to wins, and Ayo Dosunmu hit some major shots to help Illinois to victory. However, on the road, as a true freshman?

It is certainly difficult to pick a performance over this one. All I can say for sure is that Keaton Wagler is a superstar of the highest level. The Illini are blessed to have such a humble, stone-cold ball player on their side.
