Son of Illinois Basketball Legend Commits to Big Ten Foe
Team Mokan Elite’s Phoenix Gill (13) prepares to shoot a free throw during a game against Team Durant’s Jaden Fort (2) during the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League session one on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Memphis Sports & Event Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Phoenix Gill, the son of Illinois Basketball Legend, Kendall Gill, has verbally committed to Chris Collins and the Northwestern Wildcats. The young Gill held offers from Illinois, Iowa State, and Toledo, however, chose to commit to his mother’s alma mater. Per 247sports, Gill is a 6 foot 2-inch combo guard who is currently ranked 229th in the nation. The combo guard is the 4th ranked prospect in the state of Illinois. Throughout the recruitment process, Phoenix made it pretty well known that Illinois basketball was not recruiting him extremely hard and frequently mentioned Northwestern, Iowa State, and Stanford as his top schools.

This makes sense, however, as Illinois Basketball already has the commitment of Jeremiah Fears. Certainly, Fears is one of the top guards in the entire country and most recently won a Gold Medal with Team USA

A strong Fit for both

Phoenix Gill has found a strong fit at Northwestern. Chris Collins is one of the better developmental coaches in the conference and has gotten the most out of lesser-ranked recruits. The Wildcats have made the NCAA tournament the past two years and are always a tough out with their guards. A player that comes to mind when comparing Phoenix Gill is combo-guard, Ty Berry. Berry has a similar physical stature to Phoenix Gill and a similar playing style as an undersized Combo-guard. Berry is the perfect model for Phoenix Gill to follow as Berry quickly became one of the most important pieces on the team.

Illinois Basketball, on the other hand, is doing more than just fine. They continue to rake in some of the nation’s top talent from all over the world. Without a doubt, Kylan Boswell, Jeremiah Fears, and Kasparas Jakucionis are three players with next-level abilities who will help the Illini stay at the top of the Big Ten.
