Is Illinois Football vs Ryan Walters now Personal?
The Illinois vs Purdue rivalry has started to heat up.

The Illinois football team found out a way to win a football game on Saturday. It was not pretty, but the Illini found a way to force overtime and make the proper plays when it mattered.
The Illini avoided a pretty embarrassing collapse vs one of the worst power-five teams. On top of that, they avoided being on the losing end of what is becoming a bit of a personal rivalry.
The Bielema post-game conference.
The Illini did everything they could to give the game away in the second half, however, their veterans came up with big plays when needed. When Bret Bielema talked about the game, some sparks flew. Bielema said, “This one just pissed me off on many different levels. I just know how we run our business, and I’ll stand on that, so I just love the way our guys fight”. When Jeremy Werner of Illiniinquirer asked Bielema what specifically pissed him off, Bielema responded “Just everything”.
The Illini headman then seemed to show some restraint and said “Just handle your business. Do things right and a lot of good things can happen”
Context?
Bret Bielema helped Ryan Walters prepare for his first head coaching job. It seems that most of the banter between the two sides are competitive juices flowing. However, Walters also took several assistant coaches with him from Champaign to West Lafeyette. Afterward, the Illini and Purdue ran into each other plenty of times on the recruiting trail. For the most part, Walters and Purdue came out on top. Illinois had courted QB Hudson Card and wide receiver, Jayden Dixon-Veal to Champaign, however, Walters swooped in at the last minute for both.
Illinois had also prioritized in-state four-star prospect, Luke Williams, and defensive lineman Jamarrion Harkless. Once again, Williams and Harkless chose Purdue over Illinois. Recently, starting running back, Reggie Love III and defensive lineman, Trey Smith, transferred out of Illinois only to land at Purdue. Ryan Walters may not have much time as the head man, but the storylines have certainly made the game for the cannon trophy much more personal. Not to mention, the Boilermakers running on the field amidst the Illini’s alma mater.
Bret Bielema says his players wanted to win because they knew how much this matchup meant to him.
