VIDEO: Georgetown Head Coach Ed Cooley refers to Illinois as bullsh*t school
The Georgetown headman unnecessarily jeered the Illini today.
Georgetown basketball has fallen off hard. For most young adults, Georgetown was actually an old basketball powerhouse. When we think about growing up with Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson, Georgetown actually was pretty revered. However, that is not even close to the case anymore and Ed Cooley is currently trying to salvage a fallen program. Former Illini, Jayden Epps, is now in his second year at Georgetown after a one-year stop in Champaign. Epps was a talented scorer as a true freshman, but he obviously did not gel well with Brad Underwood’s hard-nosed coaching and Illinois Basketball.
Epps transferred out, and his camp made it pretty clear how they felt about Brad Underwood and the Illini.
“National News”
Georgetown needed a 21-8 run in the last six minutes of the game to beat St. Francis (Pa). In their postgame press conference, Cooley complimented the former Illinois basketball guard, Epps, for his defensive improvements. He stated “It’s almost like he’s a new player. It’s something I saw in his freshman year when he played for… that other bullsh*t school.”
Certainly, it was very unnecessary verbiage from the Georgetown headman. As Derek Piper of IlliniInquirer pointed out, Ed Cooley and Jayden Epps are 2-23 vs high-major programs. In 18 years as a head basketball coach, Cooley has made it past the round of 64 twice. Cooley stated that this would make national news, however, I doubt anyone is paying attention to the Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas went 9-23 last year and 2-18 last year, with two of those wins coming against a three-win Depaul team.
Unnecessary is a bit of an understatement here.
Ed Cooley discussing Jayden Epps’ development:

Update: Ed Cooley responded to the social media response with the following tweet:
My comment today was said in jest with one of my players, but I admit it was a poor choice of words. I have the utmost respect for the University of Illinois, its men’s basketball program, coaches and players.

Clearly, that bad blood between Jayden Epps and his camp with Illinois basketball is well-known. That was likely why Ed Cooley referred to Illinois as that, however, a head coach cannot let something slip like that. If Georgetown ever comes to Champaign for the Gavitt games, watch out.
