Illinois Football junior OLB Alec Bryant coming into his own

Illinois Football has had some star defensive players in the last two years. Fans are well aware of the former Illini defensive backs who have now found their way onto NFL rosters. Additionally, the “Law Firm” of Jer’Zhan Newton and Keith Randolph dominated the last two years on the defensive line. However, all of those players have now moved onto the professional ranks. Current players like Seth Coleman, Gabe Jacas, and even Te’rah Edwards have garnered some attention as the “next guys up”.

One player who is not mentioned enough is junior OLB Alec Bryant. Bryant transferred to the Illini in 2021 after his freshman year at Virginia Tech. The former four-star prospect is now currently having his best year.

Why not me?

During the game vs Nebraska, Alec Bryant had two sacks, two tackles for loss, and one pass deflection. During the game vs Kansas, Bryant secured a key fumble recovery in a tight win at home. Bryant told the media that after last season, he “had a come to Jesus moment”. The Pearland, Texas native referenced guys making jumps during the offseason and Newton’s dominance as motivating factors for him. The Junior outside linebacker has become an outstanding piece paired alongside the explosive tandem of Seth Coleman and Gabe Jacas.

As Illinois football continues its season and resurgence on the defensive side of the ball, players like Bryant should be given major credit.
