Leading the Way for Illinois Football

Illinois Football dominated Eastern Illinois on the shoulders of a well-balanced attack, dialed up by Offensive Coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. The Illini asserted themselves early and often in this one, and were able to send their FCS neighbors on a short road trip home with a 45-0 loss.

Illinois earned 488 yards of total offense vs the Panthers. 242 yards of which came from the passing attack, while 246 were contributed on the ground. You almost can’t get more balanced than that.

Wide-outs Malik Elzy, Pat Bryant (2), and Tight End Tanner Arkin each contributed a touchdown through the air. Additionally, the offensive line and deep running backs unit rolled the Panthers. Power backs Kaden Feagin and Josh McCray each found their way into the endzone for a score. Aidan Laughery provided a nice spark with his track speed, and racked up 79 yards on 10 carries.

Of course, Aaron Henry’s unit deserves major props as well. The Illinois Football squad pitched their largest shutout since 1973, only giving up 196 yards of total offense to the Panthers. Additionally, forcing Eastern Illinois into 4 well-timed total turnovers (2 fumbles – 2 Int). The night was a struggle for Pierce Holley, as the Illini were able to keep steady pressure on the Panthers All-OVC quarterback. An all-around dominant performance by Illinois.

Who stood out as the best on each side of the ball?

Offense – QB, Luke Altmyer

This one did not take a lot of thinking. Leading Illinois dominant offensive performance, was quarterback Luke Altmyer.

The Junior gunslinger put on a show in Champaign, and played the best game of his career, thus far. Was it against an FCS opponent, sure, but these Panthers are no punk.  Eastern Illinois returned the bulk of their starters (18 of 22) from their previous 8-3 season, and are in contention for the FCS playoffs in 2024. So, tabbing up 213 yards, 4 touchdowns passing, and 0 interceptions, with a 72.2 QBR versus their neighbors from Charleston, is noting to blink at. I think we are watching a more comfortable and confident Luke Altmyer come into form. Which, is exactly what we has hoped to see entering this season.

Honorable Mention: Pat Bryant (5 Rec, 63 yards, 2 TD’s)

Defense – DB, Miles Scott

Look at this guy stepping up. Former wide receiver, turned defensive back Miles Scott contributed to two separate turnovers for Illinois Football. One of which, was very well timed, and flipped all momentum.

Eastern Illinois has some offensive rhythm early vs the Illini defense. The Panthers were smooth on their first offensive go, and started to drive their way down the field. Undoubtedly, causing some early nerves for Illini fans. However, a punched ball fumble caused by Scott led to Illinois taking over, and driving for a quick score. From there, it seemed, the game was all in the hands of the Illini.

The Junior ball-hawked an athletic 2nd quarter interception as well. Furthermore, swinging momentum in Illinois direction, and putting the Illini in place to dominate the rest of the game.

Honorable Mention: Torrie Cox Jr. ( 2 Solo tackles, 1 Int)
