Illinois Football Wide Receiver Isaiah Williams signs an undrafted free-agent deal with the Detroit Lions. Much deserved for the former St. Louis Native.
Illinois Football Wide Receiver Drafted By (Blank)
Former Illinois Football wide receiver Isaiah Williams has signed an undrafted free-agent deal with the Detroit Lions. Certainly, a very solid fit for the St. Louis (Mo) native, as they look to continue off of last year’s electric offense. Isaiah brings quickness, versatility, and game-breaking athleticism to Motor City. The former 5-star recruit out of Trinity Catholic HS (Formerly in STL) was the biggest recruiting win of the Lovie Smith era. As well as the 9th highest-rated recruit in the modern era for Illinois Football, according to 247 Sports. Isaiah is an uncommon leader, who fought through all the obstacles that were placed in front of him at Illinois.
Initially, Williams was slated to play Quarterback for Lovie Smith. Which, he did off and on when needed, as well as spurts as a running back. However, as Isaiah matured in his game and Illinois made the transition to Bret Bielema, the move was made to make Isaiah a slot receiver. The position that best executed his rare quick twitch skills, as well as his after-contact abilities. He helped lead the Illini to an 8-4 season in 2022. The best overall season for Illinois football since 2007. As a senior in 2023, Williams was the 1,000+ yard receiver we knew he could be.
The Numbers
The 5’10 speedster had a great senior season in 2023. Despite Illinois football having a disappointing follow-up to the 2022 breakout, with a 5-7 record. Williams totaled 82 catches on the season, for 1055 yards and 5 touchdowns. Averaging 12.6 yards per catch.
The best word to describe his play is elusive. Isaiah can make you miss in a phone box, and if you don’t make a good tackle, with help, he will get loose. His “after contact” playmaking ability is very impressive. I would expect Isaiah to do just that, as he has done his entire career.
