Isaiah Williams has career game for New York Jets with over 200 all-purpose yards
The former Illini went off on Special Teams to spark the New York Jets’ first victory.
Isaiah Williams had a career game for the New York Jets today. In the team’s first win of the season, Williams accounted for over 200 all-purpose yards. Mostly, Williams contributed on special teams, where he returned 3 punts for 38 yards and 5 kickoffs for 132 yards. On offense, Williams had three total receptions for 31 yards and 1 rush for 25 yards. That is quite the recovery for a player who had some major gaffes in his New York Jets debut just a few weeks ago.
A young NFL career
Isaiah Williams has had a roller coaster start to his young NFL career. The former Illini went undrafted in the 2024 NFL draft and initially signed with the Detroit Lions. Despite playing well in certain moments, Williams was waived and spent some time as a free agent. Ultimately, Williams was picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, which seemed like a good opportunity at the time. Isaiah Williams may not have top-end speed; however, he has potential as a shifty slot receiver and kickoff/punt returner. Isaiah was then released by the Bengals but signed by the New York Jets.
Williams debuted for the Jets by returning kicks. Unfortunately, he had a fumble and a costly fair catch in a loss against the Miami Dolphins. At first, the New York Jets cut Williams just two days later, which seemed like an ominous sign for Williams. However, Williams stayed on the team as a practice squad member. Ultimately, this allowed Isaiah Williams to find his opportunity to show what he can do. As the Jets continue to rebuild, hopefully, Williams is a part of that long-term project.
