Former Illinois Star Kylan Boswell Finds Ideal NBA Landing Spot with Charlotte Hornets

Kylan Boswell will have a prime opportunity to make an NBA Roster with the Charlotte Hornets.

Former Illinois guard Kylan Boswell didn’t hear his name called during the 2026 NBA Draft. But less than 24 hours later, Boswell found exactly what he needed: opportunity.

Boswell has signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets, giving the former Illini guard a chance to split time between Charlotte and its G-League affiliate while proving he belongs at the next level. And honestly, this feels like a pretty ideal landing spot.

The Hornets are entering a new era after recently moving on from franchise guard LaMelo Ball, leaving a backcourt that suddenly feels wide open. Charlotte still has young guards in place, but there is no clear long-term answer running the second unit — and that creates an interesting path for someone like Boswell.

Because his value has never been about flashy numbers. Boswell leaves Illinois coming off the best season of his college career, averaging 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while helping lead the Illini to their first Final Four appearance since 2005. He earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and Big Ten All-Defensive Team honors while becoming one of Illinois’ most reliable veterans.

How Kylan Boswell can make an impact in the NBA

His biggest selling point, though, starts on defense. At 6-foot-2, Boswell built a reputation as one of the toughest perimeter defenders in the Big Ten. His combination of strength, lateral quickness, length, and instincts allowed Illinois to put him on nearly every type of matchup imaginable. He defended bigger wings, pressured lead guards, and brought the kind of defensive edge coaches trust immediately.

Offensively, he proved he could do a little bit of everything — initiate offense, play as a secondary creator, attack downhill, and accept whatever role winning required.

That versatility will matter in Charlotte. The Hornets are getting a proven winner — and Kylan Boswell may have quietly landed in one of the better situations available for an undrafted player.

Remember, a two-way deal is different than an Exhibit-10 Contract (like the one Ben Humrichous signed with the Brooklyn Nets). Players on two-way deals are technically on the NBA roster, practice with the team, and can be activated for up to 50 NBA games during the regular season. The rest of their time is typically spent with the team’s G-League affiliate.
