Top 25 guard Cameron Holmes to visit Illinois basketball
Can the Illini continue to build on their impressive foundation in the class of 2026?
Despite landing two commitments in the class of 2026, Illinois basketball is still searching for highly talented prep prospects. Recently, 247sports’ Dushawn London reported that top-25 prospect Cameron Holmes is locked into six official visits. Illinois basketball is one of those six schools alongside UNC, Texas, Gonzaga, Oklahoma, and Arizona. Per 247sports, Holmes is the 24th overall prospect in the class of 2026 and one of the best two-way wings in the country. He has an impressive top six, including the aforementioned schools, and plans to visit each school.
The Illini will get the first crack at Cameron Holmes as he will take his first official visit to Champaign. Per London, Holmes will be in town on September 12th. Of note, the Illini football team plays Western Michigan that same weekend.
The impact
After this year, Illinois basketball will have to replace senior guard Kylan Boswell, forward Ben Humrichous, and likely at least one of the Ivisic brothers. On top of that, Cal transfer Andrej Stojakovic could potentially make the leap to the NBA if he plays up to his potential this year. That means that Illinois will have to replace some major firepower on the perimeter. Illinois basketball has already landed combo guard Ethan Brown and forward Landon Davis, two long-term projects with high upside. However, Cameron Holmes is an immediate plug-and-play type of player.
With Boswell gone after the 2025-2026 season, Illinois needs immediate impact players on both sides of the ball. Holmes has the ability to play on and off the ball and has an advanced frame that would allow him to play strong defense at the Big Ten level. They have a sell for playing time and development that can compete with any program in the country. If the Illini can make an impact on Holmes’ first visit, watch out.
