Is Illinois Football under attack from the SEC?
The Illini are in a position now where their players are all in extremely high demand.
Illinois football has had an incredibly successful 2025 offseason. After winning the Citrus Bowl over an SEC program, Bret Bielema and his staff worked hard to capitalize on momentum by putting together an incredibly solid class of 2026. On top of that, they seemed to have retained some major talent on their roster, which puts them in a position to repeat their success.
However, recruiting and the transfer portal era have become a fluid situation. In a matter of minutes, situations can change. Players who have announced or even done media appearances with their school’s media can be in the portal the very next day. Illinois football has unfortunately fell victim to that this past week.
Josh McCray
It all started with senior running back Josh McCray. McCray had a resurgent junior season, putting together 117 carries for 609 yards and earning the Citrus Bowl MVP. He was Bret Bielema’s first recruit to hop on board as Bielema got the Illini job in 2020. However, McCray surprisingly entered the transfer portal this week despite making a media appearance about Spring practice at the beginning of April.
Without much wait, Josh McCray signed with the Georgia Bulldogs. He will certainly get a lot of NIL money, but is his role going to be that much different than at Illinois?
Victor Singleton
Victor Singleton was the crown jewel on an already impressive class of 2026. Though all the commits in the class have power-five offers, Singleton was the highest-ranked prep recruit that Bret Bielema and his staff have ever hauled in. Singleton is the 57th overall prospect in the class of 2026 and filled a huge position of need for an Illinois program that has recently produced NFL-level defensive backs.
Victor Singleton visited the Illini campus just three days prior to his flip announcement to Texas A&M.
The Power of the SEC
The SEC has a slew of teams with the deepest pocketbooks in the country. When it comes to football, the SEC teams can give players anything that they want. For an up-and-coming program like Illinois, it is tough to beat that out despite the strong relationships that Bret Bielema has cultivated. The Illini are going to lose some key players in this era, but they have done everything that they can to keep star players like Jer’Zhan Newton, Gabe Jacas, Xavier Scott, J.C. Davis, and more.
After losing McCray and Singleton, fans are now worried about the buzz that an SEC team is trying to poach their star QB, Luke Altmyer. Altmyer famously proclaimed he is coming back in front of a sold-out State Farm Center crowd and won over the entire fan base. That leads us to think that Altmyer will not transfer. However, it is important to note that the world of the portal can never be counted out.
