Terrence Shannon Jr and mother to seek 12 million dollars over prosecutions
Per a story done by the News-Gazette, former Illinois basketball star, Terrence Shannon Jr., and his mother, Treanette Reading, are claiming that local officials mishandled an accusation of sexual assault. Shannon Jr. and Ms. Reading are seeking a total of 12 million dollars in damages stemming from emotional distress, attorney fees, and loss of income. 11.5 of the 12 million stems from the damages that Terrence Shannon Jr. claims. On the other hand, his mother is seeking 500,000 dollars.
Shannon Jr. was found innocent of the charges in June 2024. He now plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves. After being found innocent, many accepted that Terrence Shannon Jr. should have his name up in the Illini rafters. Additionally, many realized that the 24-year-old lost a lot during the six months that this unfortunate case loomed over his head.
Official Statements regarding Terrence Shannon Jr.:
Per the report by the News-Gazette, the form submitted for these charges mentions a member of the Lawrence Police Department. Last week, news surfaced that Terrence Shannon Jr. and his mother were looking to press charges against Douglas County PD and the DA. This current report, states “Mr. Shannon has claims for intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution, and abuse of process (amongst other possible claims) against (redacted) and potentially the City of Lawrence and the Lawrence Police Department (in addition to federal civil rights claims, including, but not limited to, violations of the 4th and 14th Amendments),”
The claim also states that there were factors that were not given consideration during the investigation:
- An individual who was accused of a similar crime at the Jayhawk Cafe just days earlier was present on the night of the alleged incident.
- DNA testing results did not tie Shannon to the alleged assault but showed material from three other men.
- A friend of the accuser was “allegedly looking right at Mr. Shannon at the time of the alleged incident” but did not see the alleged assault occur.
Terrence Shannon Jr. also noted that he lost out on being selected in the lottery of the NBA draft. The total amount of damages stems largely in part from the difference between Lottery pick salary and regular first-round pick salary. These claims were officially filed on September 9th, of note that is exactly one year after the accuser had filed her claim.
