Recently, (2/6) Lakota West (Westchester, OH) linebacker Cam Thomas pledged his commitment to Bret Bielema and the Illinois Football program, boosting the Fighting Illini into the early top-10 for the class of 2026. (No. 8 Currently according to 247 Sports.)
Standing at 6’2″ and around 217 pounds, the future U.S. Army All-American brings a true “game-wrecking” presence to defensive coordinator Aaron Henry’s linebacker corps. Throughout his dominant junior season, Thomas racked up 84 tackles, including 4 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, and 4 pass breakups—earning Division I Third-Team All-State honors in the talent-rich state of Ohio.
On film, it’s clear to see why the 4-star has stacked impressive offers from the likes of Oregon, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Purdue, among others. Cam showcases an elite ability to diagnose plays and close gaps quickly with bad intentions—making him a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators in the Buckeye State. His explosiveness at the point of attack, combined with raw power, makes him a nightmare for opposing offenses and a high-upside prospect for the next level.
Interestingly enough, he’ll reunite with his former Lakota West teammate, fellow LB, and 2025 Illini commit, Grant Beerman. The hard-hitting duo undoubtedly shares a strong bond and hopes to shape the future of Illinois’ defense for years to come.
Fortunately, Cam was kind enough to share his thoughts on reuniting with Grant and explain why Illinois Football felt like the perfect fit for him.

What sets Illinois Football apart from other impressive opportunities?
“I had some impressive offers and opportunities, but, the Illini made me feel most at home,” Thomas states. “I definitely felt like a priority throughout the process, in the building and on campus.”
Offers: Oregon, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Purdue, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, NC State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Akron, Ball State, Charlotte, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (OH), Ohio, Toledo, UMass.
Cam’s thoughts on joining fellow Lakota West (HS) Linebacker Grant Beerman in Champaign.
“Me and Grant (Beerman) are really close,” says Thomas.
“Our families are really close, so it was important for us as it was for them. But, to be able to reunite with him with the level of communication we already have…. We should make for a great 1-2 punch for years to come.”
Outlook on the Future Direction of Illinois Football?
“Coach B was the primary reason I chose Illinois and committed early,” Cam stated. “He brings stability to the program, and he’s not afraid to let you know Illinois is coming! I’m a huge trash talker on the field so I love his personality.”
He continues, “With the class we are building, we will be in the Big Ten hunt for a while.”
Who Does Cam Like to Model His Style of Play After?
“I grew up watching Von Miller.” said the talented linebacker. “We have similar body types and definitely the same skill set. His ability to bend and purse are things I try to emulate.”
Cam additionally added, “Right now, I’d say Micah Parsons & Abdul Carter. Those guys are game wreckers, and I like to make things difficult on the offense.”
What Thomas Will Add to the Illini’s Linebacker Corps
“I tell people all the time and you can see from my tape that I’m a game wrecker.” Thomas boasts. “I can destroy plays before they even develop with my pass rush. Plus, I have the ability to chase down ball carriers sideline to sideline with my football speed.
Of course, learning from the likes of Beerman and others certainly helps. “I feel like I have a high IQ playing with so many greats at Lakota.”
