Illinois Football a “CFP Sleeper” in 2025 According to ESPN
Illinois Football a CFP Contender in 2025?
Entering the offseason stretch between spring ball and the start of summer and fall camp in June, the Illinois Football program continues to generate a wave of positive buzz about the potential this team holds heading into the 2025 season.
While it’s certainly notable that Bret Bielema retained the vast majority of his roster and production from last season’s 10-3 Citrus Bowl Championship team, no returnee was more crucial than quarterback Luke Altmyer. Despite serious buzz about a possible SEC poacher, Altmyer made it clear that Champaign will be his final stop in college football before taking the leap to the NFL next season.
With the reassurance that Luke will be leading Barry Lunney Jr.’s offense in 2025, many major outlets have fully bought into the Illinois hype train.

Why ESPN Believes Luke Altmyer Makes Illinois Football a College Football Playoff “Sleeper” in 2025
Among those who have commented on the Illini’s high ceiling potential in 2025 is ESPN’s Senior College Football Insider Heather Dinich.
On Wednesday, (4/30), Dinich stated in her story “College Football Playoff impact: Players who stuck around” that the Fighting Illini’s ability to ward off SEC power Tennessee (who has had quite the quarterback history) from their offensive leader makes them a sleeper pick for the College Football Playoff in 2025.
Can Luke Altmyer, under Bret Bielema’s leadership, help lead the Illini to their next major foundational step—sustained and continued success? According to Dinich, the Illini are capable of that and more.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich: “What his return means: Illinois can be a CFP sleeper team by competing for the Big Ten title and earning an at-large bid if it doesn’t win the league. The importance of Illinois retaining its starting quarterback after a strong spring push from Tennessee can’t be understated. The Illini have a chance to be this year’s Indiana — a Big Ten contender with a manageable schedule that can play its way into the selection committee’s rankings with a standout quarterback and his supporting cast. After public speculation he might transfer for his final year of eligibility, Altmyer announced in December he would return to the team. He did it again in April, following the drama at Tennessee. Altmyer passed for 2,543 yards, 21 touchdowns and only five interceptions last year, leading Illinois to a 9-3 regular season and a top-20 ranking in the Associated Press poll.”
