Video: Bret Bielema taunts South Carolina sideline in Citrus Bowl Win
Bret Bielema made the Citrus Bowl an event to remember.

Bret Bielema is never one to shy away from the spotlight. Even before he became the Illinois head coach, Bielema garnered a reputation for his honest press conferences and knack for providing entertainment value, especially on social media. Bielema and his team certainly impressed on the field with a 21-17 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks. However, a turning point in the game came towards the end of the third quarter. Throughout the game, Gamecocks head coach, Shane Beamer, was rather irate regarding the amount of time Bielema and his team took to get substitutions done.
This year, College football implemented a new rule that if the offense subs in players, the defense is allowed to make substitutions as well. Bret Bielema used this rule to counter the subs but to also stall for time and throw the offense off their cadence. When cornerback, Jaheim Clarke, fell with an injury toward the South Carolina sideline, the moment came.

The Taunt from Bret Bielema
Bret Bielema walked towards Clarke to check on him and held out the “Substitution” signal. While doing so, he directly made eye contact with the South Carolina sideline. Bielema continued to motion “Substitution” upon walking off the field.
To say the least, Shane Beamer was not pleased. Afterward, Bielema smiled as if he was enjoying the entire sequence, while Beamer continued to blow his fuse. Ultimately, South Carolina had to call yet another timeout due to the Illini substitutions and it seemed that Beamer lost his cool. In the end, Illinois football prevailed in what was a huge win for them and reached 10 wins for the first time since 2001. Bret Bielema deserves a statue.
Bielema clarifies and Beamer responds
In the post-game conference, Bielema clarified that he motioned the signal that kick returners do on kickoff. During the second half, South Carolina did that same motion during a kickoff which prompted Illinois players to slow down. However, the Gamecocks tried to pull a trick play which Bielema saw as unsportsmanlike and crossing the line. Shane Beamer obviously defended his decision and his team. However, Bielema stated that the gesture was not at Shane Beamer but at the “whole sideline”.
